Matthew Healy, son of actors Denise Welch and Tim Healy, grew up in Newcastle and Cheshire. He met his bandmates at Wilmslow High School in 2002, where they started playing music together as teenagers. The band officially formed after a local council worker organized a series of gigs for young musicians. The group then started playing covers before eventually writing their own songs.
